Dear FLENJ members and fellow language educators:

With Halloween in the rear-view mirror, Thanksgiving ahead, and the season in full swing, I hope that your school year is proving to be a rewarding one.

We at FLENJ are anxious to share many upcoming events!

If you are an NJEA member, please consider coming to the NJEA Convention in Atlantic City this week. The NJEA Convention has “something for everyone,” and FLENJ will be there.

Take advantage of this free PD opportunity, and stop into one of the eight sessions for world language educators. Visit exhibitors involved in your field, and be absolutely sure to visit the FLENJ booth and speak with one of our members of the FLENJ board of directors!

Registration for the event of the year is NOW open.
But early registration won’t last forever…
and rates go up on December 1.

Join us at the APA Hotel in Iselin, NJ on April 5-6 to…
 • Build bridges…
 • Open doors…
 • Create opportunities

The 2018-19 LIVE Webchat Series, hosted by new board member Dana Pilla, is now available.

$5 for members and $25 for non-members.

FLENJ Mini Grants for Teachers

Every year, FLENJ provides mini-grants up to $2,000 for innovate projects related to world language education. Past winners have used the grant to purchase iPads, headsets, video cameras and other materials for classroom use. Deadline for submissions: December 1, 2018.

FLENJ Education Program Abroad (EPA)
FLENJ promotes excellence in 21st century world language education by supporting educators in their travel abroad. The Education Program Abroad program awards up to $3,000 to recipients. Previous winners have traveled to Panama, Peru, Mexico, and Chile. Deadline for submissions: December 1, 2018.

FLENJ Senior Scholarships
FLENJ supports our members’ students, too. We provide scholarships to recognize graduating seniors who have demonstrated excellence in their study of language. Participation requires that students’ applications be submitted by January 11, 2019.

FLENJ Teacher of the Year
As members of FLENJ, you have the opportunity to represent the best of New Jersey! FLENJ identifies exemplary world language teachers who personify and promote the best in our profession. The FLENJ Teacher of the Year will be honored at the annual conference in April and have the opportunity to compete at the regional level the following winter at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL). The regional teacher of the year competes to become the national ACTFL Teacher of the year. Consider nominating someone today! Deadline for nominations: December 1, 2018.

Finally, I would like to close this message with a reminder of our FLENJ mission:

FLENJ supports the community of world language educators by supporting instructional practices but also by influencing educational policies that ensure high quality world languages education in schools.

Sometimes, we forget the influence that politics has over educational policies. Sometimes we forget that every vote makes a difference. Therefore, I encourage you to exercise your right to vote in any election today in which you are eligible.
As always, if you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or to any of the directors on the FLENJ board.
Yours in language education,
