An additional feature of the TOAs is the availability of benchmark samples.

While these benchmarks are not available for every TOA, they provide concrete evidence to students of the kinds of things the rubric looks for to assess performance at the various quality gradations stipulated in the rubric. “The picture is worth a thousand words” axiom thus helps students understand “quality” and can even encourage and inspire students to achieve to a higher level than they normally might due to the fact that they clearly understand what is expected for the various performance levels of the rubric.
