Friday, April 9th Full Day Pre-Conference Workshops 9:00-3:00 (Lunch Included in All Sessions)

Culture: Expanding My World View: Donna Clementi, Concordia Language Villages
Successful integration of language and culture depends on the choices teachers make about course content. Participants in this workshop are asked to place culture at the center of their planning in order to help students understand the world in which they live and who they are, and to help them explore and respond to important questions about their own culture and other cultures. With culture as the organizational center, participants will learn tools and techniques to expand students’ intercultural understanding and ability to communicate with sensitivity and respect in our global community.

Lights, Camera, Action: Using Video Clips: Arlene White, Salisbury University & Ruth Malone, Wicomico County PS
Rather than always being tied to showing an entire film or video, this presentation will explore using short clips to integrate language and culture into daily instructional activities. A myriad of ideas and resources will be shared in this interactive workshop. No background knowledge about film or video is required. The workshop is presented in English with examples in French and Spanish but the vast majority of resources can be adapted to any film, to any language, and to any level of language learner.

Making Language Learning Essential in Your School: Content Based Curriculum Development and Instruction in World Language Programs: Amanda Seewald, Maracas, Inc.
This workshop will explore teaching world languages using content area goals as a vehicle towards language learning. We will look at standards and concepts at varying levels of elementary education to determine what can be used as a part of instruction within the language classroom. Science, Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts will be included in this interactive professional learning and curriculum building experience. By the end of this workshop, participants will have worked with peers to create frameworks for entire units within at least one content area in the target language.

Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA) Familiarization Workshop: Bonnie Adair-Hauck, University of Pittsburgh, PA
In this workshop, participants are presented with an overview of the ACTFL Integrated Performance Assessment at the Novice, Intermediate, and Pre-Advanced levels. The three modes of communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, Presentational) and the ACTFL Performance Guidelines for K-12 Learners are reviewed as they apply to Integrated Performance Assessment. After examining the tasks and rubrics, participants rate samples of student performance.

International Education & World Languages: Cheri Quinlan, NJDOE Coordinator for World Language & International Education
The 2009 Core Curriculum Content Standards in all content areas integrate 21st Century Knowledge and Skills by incorporating a strong emphasis on technology integration, interdisciplinary connections and infusion of global perspectives. This full-day workshop will showcase how New Jersey world languages teachers are infusing global perspectives through connections to other communities and exploration of 21st Century Themes. Attendees will leave the workshop with concrete ways to address global perspectives in engaging and real-life contexts.

Chinese Immersion: Lucy Lee, Livingston High School; Chinese Language Association of Secondary Schools
Workshop participants will discuss and share effective strategies, activities and resources that enhance standards-based instruction. The afternoon discussions will center around specific issues related to the teaching of Chinese. Discussions and presentations will be conducted in Chinese language. Teachers of Chinese in New Jersey are cordially invited to participate in this interactive session. Chinese heritage school teachers are welcome to join your colleagues
from K-12 schools.

French Immersion – Le film du Monde Francophone: by the American Association of Teachers of French, New Jersey Chapter: AATF-NJ
« Le film du Monde Francophone » is a full day workshop for teachers who want to expose themselves to the richness of the world of Francophone film and multimedia. The presenters will offer examples of film, short clips, television news, movie trailers and other multimedia with activities that are « prêt-à-porter » for use Monday morning in class. The day will be conducted entirely in French with a luncheon served at the hotel.

Italian Immersion – Amedeo Modigliani and his time Maria Papaleo
Modigliani, the bohemian artist, the man who told stories about women, love, life, history through his art. This workshop will focus on the life and work of one of the finest Italian painters of the 20th century. We will not only study his art work but also discuss his operatic life story and how it shaped his artwork.

Spanish Immersion – “Spicing the Spanish Classroom: Salsa 101” José G. Ricardo-Osorio, Ed.D. Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania
In this one-day workshop, attendees will first get engaged in a series of activities designed around salsa as a cultural product. Such activities will involve: text interpretation, exchanging information, presenting information, music appreciation, and yes, salsa dancing! During the second part, participants will have the opportunity to create and present their own activities. Neither formal training in salsa dancing nor previous knowledge of the topic are required. However, participants should have an Intermediate-High or above proficiency level in Spanish since the entire workshop
will be carried out in the target language.
