How do we continue to exploit emerging technologies to meet the needs of 21st century learners? Learn about the many resources available to administrators, supervisors, and world languages educators to help them help students meet the New Jersey World Language Standard. Find out how to navigate and use the standard document and accompanying materials to develop curriculum, deliver instruction, and assess progress of world language students.

Part II – Theories and Applications of Integrating Language and Culture: A Case of Language for Professional Purposes

In today’s world, it is considered important to acquire not only target language proficiency but also intercultural competence, as the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (1999) emphasizes incorporating cultural components in foreign language education.This workshop will explore how to integrate language and culture in the foreign language classrooms with a focus on Language for Professional Purposes. It will discuss theories of culture learning and investigate how we can incorporate these effectively in the curriculum development.The presenter, who is teaching Intermediate Business Japanese, presents an example of a language/culture learning curriculum framework for business language instruction.Participants will be engaged in a variety of cultural instructional activities and discuss how they might apply in their language classrooms.They will develop an activity integrating culture and language for their own classrooms.
